Colorado Fitness to Drive CoP Documents Scripting
Scripting about Medical Clearance to Drive:
“Colorado is a Self-reporting state and we are all required to report any medical change that could affect our ability to drive. So, it is important that you have the data to answer that question. The process involves you, your doctor and the DMV. I (OT) am collecting data for the doctor. We are going to do some tests that will help you and the doctor decide if you should continue to drive (or are ready to return to driving). Sometimes, the solution is a middle ground of driving with some restrictions. We will be working together to come up with those answers for your doctor.”
Scripting about Safe Driving Concerns:
“After working with you in therapy over the past few days, I have noticed that you have difficulties with such and such task. Having difficulty in this area, may indicate difficulty in driving where high levels of attention, awareness, visual skills, reaction time, and multi-tasking are required. I would like to further assess skills related to driving and see if there are areas we can focus on in our time together. We will also problem solve getting around the community via public transportation as well.”
Recommending Specialized Driver Evaluation:
“The next step in your driving assessment is for you to see a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist. That person will use your information and will do some additional tests, including an ON-ROAD test to understand your abilities for safe driving. That information will be used by your Dr. to make further decisions about your driving plan. The CDRS has years of experience in helping people in your situation understand their strengths and weaknesses relative to driving.”
